Penthouse invites Oscar-snubbed mainstream female directors to make XXX movies

Penthouse Global Media appreciates mainstream female directors in a way that even the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences apparently doesn’t.

The Oscars often snub filmmakers who are women, no matter how well their films do with critics or at the box office. But those women behind the lens of Hollywood movies could finally get equal pay for their work in Penthouse productions, as the company has offered those who didn’t get Oscar nominations the chance to direct major adult releases.

This might seem like a gimmick, if you’re unaware of Penthouse’s Hollywood history. Caligula, the 1979 cult classic, boasted a script by Gore Vidal and a renowned cast that included Dame Helen Mirren, Sir John Gielgud, Peter O’Toole and Sir Malcolm McDowell. Penthouse founder Bob Guccione produced this controversial yet undeniably legendary film, which was released in both “softcore” 90-minute and XXX 160-minute versions.

Penthouse CEO Kelly Holland points out that the adult company has an even larger audience than many mainstream studios, with content being broadcast in more than 100 countries all over the world.

In the adult industry, women directed 40% of the films that were nominated for major industry awards last year. This is a stark contrast to the way that the Academy and Hollywood in general treats female filmmakers. The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University reported a 2% decline in the percentage of female directors and producers working on Hollywood’s 250 highest-grossing movies from 2015 to 2016.

It might seem crazy to say that the porn business respects women more than Hollywood does, but these statistics back up that statement. Holland says that while mainstream movies try to tell stories of the human condition, it’s porn that shows us “the most fundamental human condition,” which is sex. “At Penthouse, we like to think everyone has XXX chromosomes, which explains why equality is so deeply embedded in our brand DNA,” Holland says.

We have yet to see if any of these mainstream female directors will take Penthouse up on the offer, but it’s out there for any of them who are truly bold and brave.
